Feb 19: Red Fort and Baby Taj

Our room at the Gateway Hotel affords us views of the Taj Mahal - the only hotel in Agra to do so.  So the next morning, from our bedroom window we watched the Taj Mahal emerge into our view as the mist was gradually burnt away by the sun.  Quite magical.

Must say we're glad we visited it the previous afternoon in the sunshine.

Big day of sightseeing still today.  On a very hot day with no air con in the van!

First an hour's drive to the abandoned Moghul Capital of Fatehpur Sikri.

The back to Agra across agricultural plains to the "Baby Taj", the burial place of the grandfather of the Maharajah who built the Taj Mahal.  A stunning building too, on a much smaller scale, that is how it got its "baby" status.

We finished the day at the Red Fort where the builder of the Taj was imprisoned by his sons.

This is where he would sit and look at the Taj across the river and remember his beautiful wife.
